Toyota’s motorsport-inspired Proace PRO40 camper conversion has a great new look for 2015, re-wrapped in a new livery to celebrate Toyota Gazoo Racing’s champion status in the World Endurance Championship.

Inspired by the success of the team and its star pilots Anthony Davidson and Sebastian Buemi – who jointly claimed the drivers’ championship title – Toyota has updated the PRO40’s racing decals to match this season’s TS040 Hybrid race car. That includes proudly displaying the new number one on the doors.

The camper’s refreshed appearance coincides with the early rounds of this year’s WEC race series. Following a strong showing at the season-opening contest at Silverstone, Toyota is targeting a repeat of last year’s victory at the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this Saturday (2 May).

Based on a standard Toyota Proace van, the PRO40 was created by conversion specialists G&P. The Staffordshire-based firm, which has years of experience working with Toyota models, fitted out the van with four-berth accommodation and an array of home comforts, including a gas hob, fridge-freezer, microwave oven, TV and water supply.

Sometimes a shovel just doesn’t cut it.

To break ground on its new production engineering campus in Georgetown today, Toyota called in a pro. A 2015 TRD Pro Series Tundra, that is.

During a ceremony Tuesday, the custom-designed Toyota truck took the spotlight, moving dirt to signal the start of construction on the building that will soon house the company’s North American production engineering team. Located on the grounds of Toyota’s largest vehicle manufacturing operation, once complete, the 250,000 sq. ft. building will include a state-of-the-art test lab and provide an innovative work space for approximately 700 team members.

Toyota’s expansion in Georgetown represents a local investment of $80 million, and marks its third major groundbreaking event in North America since the start of the year.

“Bringing Toyota’s production engineering team under one roof is a key element of Toyota’s ongoing unification of our North American operations, which includes a new headquarters in Plano, Texas and new facilities in Ann Arbor, Michigan,” said Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz. “The impact of these investments will be felt by our customers through improved quality, adoption of new technologies and greater value of the vehicles we produce, like the iconic Camry built here in Georgetown, Kentucky.”

At the ceremony, Toyota thanked the community for nearly three decades of support by announcing donations of three Toyota vehicles to local organizations. These included:
Salato Wildlife Education Center, which engages over 100,000 people annually through education about the importance of Kentucky’s natural resources;
SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region), an organization formed by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers to re-grow and diversify the economy in Eastern Kentucky;
Scott United, an arm of the Georgetown-Scott County Chamber of Commerce aimed at advancing workforce development in the hometown of Toyota’s largest vehicle manufacturing plant.
Joining Lentz were 100 production engineering team members, many of who are soon-to-be residents of Central Kentucky. As part of the expansion, Toyota is relocating approximately 300 people to the Georgetown campus, a move that furthers Toyota’s commitment to drive more local decision-making and ultimately faster, more precise response to the needs of the marketplace.

“We are excited to expand the presence that Toyota started over 25 years ago,” said Production Engineering Senior Vice President, Tadahisa Isono. “From this facility, we will not only support our diverse workforce and network of manufacturing operations throughout North America, we will also equip our team to bring the future of manufacturing to the present.”

Construction is expected to be complete in late 2017.

Toyota’s auto hauling carrier, Toyota Transport, was recognized today for its mindful approach to the environment. Toyota Transport moves approximately 430,000 new Toyota and Lexus vehicles to dealerships every year, on the west coast, and takes pride to make those moves as environmentally efficient as possible. Because of those efforts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Toyota Transport with a SmartWay Excellence Award.

This is the second time Toyota has won this award. In 2013, Toyota Logistics Services won the Excellence Award as a shipper.

The award recognizes the top one percent of SmartWay partners with superior environmental performance. It aims to accelerate the availability, adoption and market penetration of advanced fuel efficient technologies and operational practices in the freight supply chain, while helping companies save fuel, lower costs and reduce adverse environmental impacts.

“Toyota Transport is committed to reducing its environmental impact,” said Kirk Welch, senior analyst, Toyota Transport compliance. “We are honored to accept this award and look forward to continually improving and continually exceeding SmartWay’s expectations.”

Toyota is committed to utilizing only SmartWay highway transportation carriers. These carriers’ have been tested and verified, through the SmartWay Assessment Tool, as carriers that continually reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. Toyota’s logistics partners are committed to investing in enhanced new equipment and industry best practices in order to maintain their SmartWay certification.

EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is a market-driven initiative that empowers businesses to move goods in the cleanest, most energy-efficient way possible, while protecting public health and reducing the impacts of climate change. Since 2004, SmartWay Partners have saved 144.3 million barrels of oil and $20.6 billion in fuel costs. SmartWay’s clean air achievements (61.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 1,070,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 43,000 tons of particulate matter emissions avoided) help to protect the well-being of citizens.
