Ford commercial vehicles are selling well at Midlands-based supplier Vanfridge, thanks to Ford’s comprehensive CV range providing the best match for the needs of customers looking for refrigerated vans.

Vanfridge and sister company Pola Van Rental have seen a 25 per cent year-on-year boost in orders for Ford vans, chiefly Transit Connects and Transit Customs.

Vanfridge managing director, Mark Foster, explains that it’s a combination of Ford’s diverse product range and his company’s expertise which is bringing in the customers: “The majority of our clients have small fleets, up to five vans, and they come to us because they want specialist advice and a good deal.

“The Ford range has a model to suit every requirement and Ford’s service and aftersales support, and competitive cost of ownership, make the Transit range an unbeatable proposition.”

Vanfridge is a major supplier to frozen meal home delivery market leader Wiltshire Farm Foods. Adds Mark Foster: “We always have between five and 10 Ford Transit Connect and Ford Transit Custom models to Wiltshire’s specification either in stock, undergoing conversion or at some stage of factory order; so an existing or new franchisee can be supplied with the appropriate specification refrigerated vehicle within a couple of weeks.”

Associate firm Pola Van Rental has a fleet of 57 refrigerated vans, 40 of which are Ford Transit models, on long-term rental with customers ranging from ice-cream vendors to a water authority requiring refrigerated transport for water samples.

Ford fleet business manager Martin McDonald said: “Vanfridge is doing great business for itself and for Ford, thanks to its customer-focused approach and ability to provide a bespoke service and a rapid off-the-shelf supply of refrigerated vans.”

Ford has won a tender to supply Thames Water with around 900 new vans over the next three years. The single-badge deal with Ford will see the UK’s largest water and wastewater services provider taking vehicles from across the Ford commercial vehicle range – Fiesta Van, Transit Connect, Transit Custom, Transit and Ranger.

The first batch of 223 vans has been delivered to the company’s bases in London and south-east England, and will play a vital role in Thames Water’s provision of water services to its nine million customers.

The van fleet – consisting of Transit Custom, Transit Connect, Transit, Fiesta Van and Ford Ranger – is equipped and liveried at the Southall workshops of Bri-Stor Systems.

The tender process was measured by whole-life costs, with Ford meeting all Thames Water’s vehicle requirements. Stephen Gafson, Ford direct sales manager, said: “We are delighted to have won this new contract with Thames Water, and to have come out on top in the company’s very thorough review and tender process.”

Michelle Nasr, Thames Water’s fleet and transportation manager, said: “Our fleet of 1,300 commercial vehicles is absolutely vital to the smooth running of our operations, and in maintaining the flow of 2,600 million litres of drinking water every day to our customers.”

Ford, America’s truck leader, today introduces the all-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty – the toughest, smartest, most capable Super Duty truck lineup ever.

“Ford Super Duty is the truck America’s hardest-working men and women trust and depend on,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, The Americas. “We are helping these customers build a better world by delivering a new generation of pickups that set new benchmarks in capability, performance and efficiency.”

Using advanced materials to reduce weight, 2017 F-Series Super Duty pickup truck and chassis cab feature all-new, segment-exclusive smart technology to help increase customer productivity, comfort and convenience.

“While Super Duty is America’s best-selling heavy-duty truck, we never take our leadership for granted,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development and chief technical officer. “Our team is using relentless innovation in materials, technology and Built Ford Tough engineering to deliver customers our best Super Duty yet.”

Toughest
The backbone is an all-new, fully boxed frame comprised of more than 95 percent high-strength steel that offers up to 24 times stiffer than the previous frame – enabling the most towing and hauling capability ever delivered by Super Duty. The new truck line features heavier-duty four-wheel-drive components, driveline, axles and towing hardware.

For the first time, the Super Duty body uses high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy, which is more dent- and ding-resistant than the outgoing steel body and not subject to red rust corrosion.

Together, high-strength steel and high-strength aluminum alloy help reduce weight by up to 350 pounds while Ford is reinvesting additional weight savings everywhere it counts, to give customers more towing and hauling capability than ever before.

Super Duty chassis cab features an all-new, high-strength steel frame with an open-C-channel design behind the cab to enable easy aftermarket body upfit and modification.

Smartest
Towing is core to the Super Duty mission. All-new advanced coaching and camera technology makes conventional and gooseneck/fifth-wheel towing easier and more efficient than ever.

There are 16 segment-first new features – from LED lighting to adaptive cruise control – that assist Super Duty drivers to make driving and work situations easier and more comfortable.

As many as seven cameras help customers see more angles and monitor conditions surrounding the truck, and provide better trailering than ever before.

A center high-mounted stop lamp camera provides visibility into the cargo box, especially for easier hook-up of gooseneck/fifth-wheel trailers. A 360-degree camera system uses four digital, high-definition cameras to give the driver a bird’s-eye view surrounding Super Duty. Trailer reverse guidance provides visual cues and tips to help ease backing up a trailer. A first-ever, factory-available trailer camera can be attached to a trailer to improve visibility backing up.

Customers will benefit from a segment-first, in-cab trailer tire pressure monitoring system from the comfort of the cab while stopped or on the highway.

Adaptive steering provides for increased confidence to help make towing the heaviest of loads easier and brings greater ease to navigating job sites and parking lots – with or without a trailer. The technology reduces the amount of steering input needed to change direction at low speed, while reducing sensitivity to steering input at higher speeds.

The all-new F-Series Super Duty is available with numerous driver-assist technologies:

SYNC® 3 – Ford’s all-new communications and entertainment system features faster performance, conversational voice recognition and an easier-to-understand graphical interface, along with an intuitive smartphone-like 8-inch touch screen

Blind Spot Information System with trailer tow is optimized for Super Duty to include the length of the trailer; BLIS® uses radar sensors in the taillamps to monitor areas that may not be visible to the driver

Lane departure warning provides a warning when a driver strays from a lane through a series of steering wheel vibrations that mimic rumble strips

Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support use sensors to detect slower vehicles moving in the same direction. If another vehicle is too close, red lights flash on the windshield and a warning sound chimes. If the driver does not hit the brakes, the brake system is pre-charged to stop faster when the brake pedal is pressed

Advanced light-emitting diode technology sheds light all around the new Super Duty, including:

New LED sideview mirror spotlights enable illumination surrounding the truck to light up a work site or camp site

Class-exclusive quad-beam LED headlamps and taillamps

New LED cargo box lighting

Most capable
Light-weighting and improved capability work hand-in-hand in the all-new Ford F-Series Super Duty.

“As we remove weight, we’re making Super Duty more productive by giving our customers better towing and payload capability,” said Craig Schmatz, Super Duty chief engineer. “We’re backing up improved capability with a stronger gasoline and diesel Super Duty engine lineup.”

The second-generation Ford-designed, Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 diesel engine is available for pickup trucks and chassis cabs providing the highest combination of horsepower and torque ever.

The 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine comes equipped with the new TorqShift-G transmission for the F-250 pickup – allowing for improved capability.

The Super Duty chassis cab lineup offers a choice of 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel, 6.8-liter V10 gasoline or 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engines.

“The bottom line is Super Duty customers will be able to tow and haul more than ever before,” said Schmatz.

Interior and cargo box
All three cabs – Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab – are longer and feature a new interior design, including dual compartment glove box, overhead console-mounted auxiliary switches to operate aftermarket equipment, and completely flat SuperCab and Crew Cab second-row floors that make loading large items in the cab easy. Vital controls are close at hand, with the integrated trailer brake controller switch located even closer to the driver.

Customer accessibility and ease of use extend outside the truck as well, with the cargo box offering customers these class-exclusive features:

BoxLink™: Ford-patented combination of metal brackets and custom cleats that can be used to secure a variety of accessories in the cargo box

Remote tailgate lock and release: Tailgate can be locked/unlocked and opened with the key fob, eliminating manual locking and increasing convenience and security. The tailgate is damped – dropping gently down, hands-free, to a flat position when opened

There are five models in the Super Duty lineup – XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum.

The all-new Super Duty will be built at Kentucky Truck Plant, and goes on sale late next year.

The bible for the farming community in Ireland, the Irish Farmer’s Journal (IFJ), has awarded its inaugural Farmer’s 4x4 Pick-Up 2016 award to the Ford Ranger. The IFJ award is designed to highlight the best 4x4 Pick-Up on the market that meets the particular needs of farmers across Ireland.

“We are delighted that the Farmer’s Journal expert panel has picked the Ford Ranger as the most suitable 4x4 Pick-Up for Ireland’s farmers”, said Ciarán McMahon, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “Our Ranger provides customers with an unbeatable combination of four-wheel drive and class-leading wading capability; stand-out styling; and great fuel efficiency, towing and payload capacity.”

The Ford Ranger came out on top of the Farmer’s Journal Machinery and Motoring team’s stringent testing regime which was carried out during a day of testing on a Co. Wexford farm. The 4x4 Pick Up testing included off-road driving, trailer towing and all round serviceability tests. For the towing test, each vehicle was fitted with a tow hitch and full trailer lighting kit in order to tow a tandem axle braked trailer with a secure one tonne load on board. Additional tests included fuel economy and off road driving ability (without a trailer).

“The Ford Ranger is no stranger to awards, when this version was launched, it won the coveted International Pick-Up of the Year award in 2013. And in 2016, we will see a new and even more efficient version of the Ford Ranger with additional engine options offering improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions”, said McMahon.

With a choice of 150PS 2.2 litre TDCi or 200PS 3.2 litre TDCi highly efficient stage V powertrains, the Ford Ranger has a gross payload of up to 1,340kg and can tow up to 3,500kg.

The six 4x4 Pick-Ups tested in the IFJ Farmer’s 4x4 Pick-Up Award programme included the Ford Ranger, Great Wall Steed, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi L200, Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok.

This summer an engineering prototype of the all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor tackled the dunes at Silver Lake, Mich., State Park. Redesigned, larger FOX Racing Shox with more suspension travel and all-new terrain management technology help F-150 Raptor tackle the toughest of surfaces. An available Torsen front differential increases off-road capability further. The system increases grip significantly for the front end of the truck and allows it to pull itself over obstacles and up steep grades – even when traction is split between the front tires. The all-new 2017 Raptor is powered by Ford’s new, second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine.

Ford Transit’s all-wheel-drive capability has earned the commercial workhorse a new order from the Environment Agency, which is taking delivery of 55 models.

The Ford Transit models will go into service across England assisting with the agency’s flood and coastal risk management programmes, for which AWD traction is vital.

“Our work inevitably requires us to visit rural areas where access can be a bit of a challenge,” said Dale Eynon, head of fleet services, “and while we need vehicles which can get our staff off road, we don’t have a need for massive, carbon-heavy 4x4s. The AWD Transit is an ideal combination because it has the ability, the size, is much lower on carbon and more cost-effective.

“The vehicles will be used to help our work to protect people and the environment, in particular accessing remote sites for tasks such as tree clearance, construction and the operation of flood defences.”

All the vans are being converted by Leicestershire-based specialist Bott with special racking for tools and light bars, with some of the Transits being turned into ‘welfare units’, equipped with lavatories and heating, which allow staff respite from bad weather and a comfortable environment in which to eat and rest between shifts.

The 55 new Transit models, all 350 AWD long-wheelbase versions powered by the 2.2-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi engine, join a 1,400-strong multi-badge fleet at the Environment Agency.

Paul Henderson, direct sales manager, Ford of Britain, said the AWD Transit offered much-needed off-road traction when needed: “Under normal conditions the drive is directed to the van’s rear wheels but the AWD system automatically transfers engine torque to whichever wheels have the most grip. It makes the Transit an even more versatile workmate.”

Ford, America’s truck leader, has outfitted hard-working fleets with more F-650 and F-750 trucks in the first eight months of 2016 than all year in 2015.

Sales of the all-new medium-duty Ford trucks are up 59 percent year-over-year through August, with 10,160 sold. That’s the best year-to-date sales total for Ford’s largest trucks since August 1997.

The sales growth has come quickly: The redesigned F-650 and F-750 trucks rolled off the line at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant near Cleveland for the first time in August 2015. Ford shifted production to Ohio from Mexico in 2015 and invested $168 million in the Ohio plant.

The F-650 and F-750 line-up includes Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab body styles, as well as straight-frame, kick-up frame Pro Loader and a new dedicated tractor model for heavy towing applications.

“We’re seeing growing interest in the new tractor from beverage and hauling fleets,” says Kevin Koester, Ford medium-duty truck and Super Duty fleet marketing manager. “Giving our customers the choice of two exclusive powertrains, available across all body styles and designed specifically for the unique needs of the vocational truck market, has really helped drive sales of our new trucks.”

Ford remains the only automaker to offer a gasoline-powered engine in the medium-duty truck segment. The 6.8-liter V10 with 320 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque is available for both F-650 and F-750 models with the heavy-duty, Ford-built TorqShift HD six-speed automatic transmission. The 6.8-liter engine can be factory-prepped for converting to compressed natural gas or liquid propane gas as cost-effective alternatives to gasoline.

Ford is the only medium-duty truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination – ensuring the powertrain will work seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations, and providing customers with streamlined service. The Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel engine delivers best-in-class standard 270 horsepower and 675 lb.-ft. of torque, plus available engine outputs of 300 horsepower with 700 lb.-ft. of torque and 330 horsepower with 725 lb.-ft. of torque. It is backed by an unsurpassed five-year/250,000-mile warranty.

“Towing and rental customers have embraced the gas engine, and others are looking at this powertrain for more severe service applications,” Koester says. “Our diesel customers are praising the quietness of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine. Not only is it up to 45 percent quieter in the cabin at idle than the outgoing model, it’s so quiet that customers have told us that there have been times when they’ve approached the truck in front of the grille and didn’t even realize it was running.”

Another feature resonating with customers, Koester says, is the TorqShift HD’s available Live-Drive Power Takeoff Provision. The diesel engine can crank out 300 lb.-ft. of stationary torque and 200 lb.-ft. in mobile mode, giving customers the power they need to operate a wide range of equipment on the job site. Diesel models can accommodate split-shaft PTO applications, as well. New for 2017 is the addition of mobile mode on the 6.8-liter V10 engine.
